This backgrounder provides an overview of peacekeepers and peacekeeping operations in Africa. More specifically, the author examines 1) which organizations deploy peacekeepers in Africa and where to; 2) the UN's and African Union's (AU) peacekeeping mandates in Africa; 3) how peace operations are staffed and funded; 4) the effectiveness of peacekeeping operations in Africa; and 5) how the success of a peacekeeping operation can be defined.
