This report focuses on the key roles effective governance and institution-building play in mitigating both conflict and instability in Africa. In particular, the report 1) reviews the trends that have influenced governance in Africa since the 1950s; 2) identifies the sources of ongoing violence on the continent; 3) considers how effective democratic governance can bring an end to the violence; and 4) recommends ways that African governments, the African Union and the international community can help prevent future conflicts.
