In the context of the May 2015 Eastern Partnership summit in Riga, this brief examines the relationship between the EU and the countries of its Eastern Partnership (EaP). The author argues that as long as the EaP countries are poor, vulnerable to aggression and politically unstable, they will erode the security of the rest of Europe. He then provides recommendations for the EU on how to reinvigorate the EaP and suggests that the EaP should become a part of a broader partnership that would include a role for the US to provide support and consultation to EaP countries.
