This paper discusses how Russia has been dealing with the opposition from Crimean Tartars since Moscow's annexation of Crimea in 2014 and contends that Russia has responded to the protests of this minority group with repression. The author also discusses how the historical treatment of Crimean Tartars by the Soviet regime informs the minority's perspective of Russia; how the 2014 annexation - accompanied by a propaganda campaign - has helped Russian President Putin's regime overcome a legitimacy crisis; the prospects for Crimea under Moscow's control; and how the West and Turkey should respond to Russia's repression of the Crimean Tartars.
