This paper examines the migration policies of the EU and its member states, with a particular focus on their approach to irregular migration flows from Africa across the Mediterranean. The authors also provide recommendations for the EU on how to respond to the problems created by this migration - such as the accidents in the Mediterranean which have led to the deaths of many migrants and refugees - for both the short and long term, including the suggestion that all EU member states should commit to a fairer allocation of refugees.
