This paper identifies some of the most significant global challenges and trends today and how they are affecting Europe, the responses of the EU to these problems and how the Union can deal with these challenges in the future. Among other issues, the authors discuss 1) the threat Russia's growing assertiveness is posing to the European security order; 2) insecurity and conflict in the Middle East and the Sahel; 3) shifts in global economic and political power; 4) the challenges facing the future of the international financial system; 5) the energy dependence of EU member states on other countries; and 6) how the international community can deal with climate change.
