This paper discusses some of the main developments which have occurred in the area of nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament since the signing of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) in 1970. The author reports that after the troubled phase of the early 2000s, the 2010s have witnessed some important, albeit reversible, improvements, such as the April 2015 breakthrough in the Iran nuclear talks which might pave the way for a final agreement. However, he also points out that progress on non-proliferation has not been matched by anything comparable in terms of disarmament, with the 2010 US-Russian New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty standing out as an isolated success.
