This paper discusses how China's launch of economic and foreign policy initiatives, such as the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) and the Eurasian ‘Silk Road’ infrastructure projects, is likely to have implications which reach far beyond East Asia. The authors provide an overview of these economic initiatives, as well as others in which China is involved, such as the New Development Bank (NDB), the motivations behind setting up these up and how other countries have responded. Finally, they discuss how policy makers in EU member states can react to China's initiatives.
