Jun 2015

This brief examines the security situation in Afghanistan in June 2015, suggesting it is the worst it has been in several years. The author focuses specifically on 1) the political developments in President Ashraf Ghani's power-sharing arrangement with Abdullah Abdullah and the government's response to the threat posed by the co-called Islamic State (IS); 2) the 2015 outlook for the increased period of fighting in the country that usually lasts between May to October; and 3) the prospects for peace negotiations with the Taliban.
