This article reviews Bulgaria’s plans to modernize its gas sector following Russia's decision to halt construction of the South Stream pipeline in December 2014. It also discusses the political tensions between Bulgaria and Russia that resulted from the project's collapse. The author states that following the suspension of South Stream, Bulgaria announced it would create a gas hub in the country - which would store and distribute gas from Azerbaijan and Russia for the EU - and work to develop its own gas reserves. He contends that although the chances of creating a gas hub in Bulgaria are not high, the European Commission should still continue to support Sofia in its efforts to diversify its gas supply sources.
