This paper argues that one of the main reasons why Canada has repeatedly emphasized that it does not accept Russia's annexation of Crimea is due to the large and politically active Ukrainian diaspora in the country. The author also examines the extent of Ottawa's military and economic assistance to Ukraine and highlights the importance of Canada for the EU and Poland in building support for, and democracy in, Ukraine.
