This book looks at politics in Africa and how it shapes development on the continent, specifically referring to foreign aid, local government, public administration, taxation, agriculture and political systems. It includes essays on, among other things, 1) the question whether “real aid” can be measured; 2) the political economy of local governance in Tanzania; 3) Malawi’s civil service reform; 4) taxation and the governance dividend; 5) policy interventions and Chinese investment in African agricultural sectors; and 6) civil society organizations and policy-making in Africa.
