This backgrounder provides an overview of the sanctions the US, the UN and the EU have levied against Iran since the UN nuclear watchdog found in 2005 that Tehran was not compliant with its international obligations. The author also looks at 1) why Iran faces these sanctions; 2) the impact the sanctions have had on the Iranian economy; and 3) the circumstances that would lead to the lifting of the sanctions.
