This paper discusses the potential for Russia to begin exploiting its unconventional gas resources. In particular, the author examines 1) the economic limitations Russia currently faces in beginning extraction of unconventional gas; 2) how the country may turn to extraction of unconventional gas as a way of expanding its geopolitical power; and 3) how Russia will have to form new partnerships with other countries to develop an unconventional gas extraction capability.
