This brief confirms that the Sahel is indeed vulnerable to climate change and that its effects could contribute to increased conflict in the region, now and in the future. In the case of now, climate change may already be threatening existing peacebuilding and development efforts, which may need to be adapted accordingly. In the case of the future, violence in the Sahel may spike because of the region's poor adaptation capacity -- i.e., its widespread poverty, population growth, corruption, poor governance and weak institutions.
