In light of China's creation of an Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) over the disputed Senkaku/Diaoyu islands in 2013, this brief provides some background information on what constitutes an ADIZ and contends that China's politicization of ADIZs potentially jeopardizes regional and national security. The authors then put forward a set of recommendations for the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the international community on how to best define and regulate ADIZs.
