This paper discusses the corruption-driven losses suffered by developing countries and the approaches Switzerland and other members of the international community have adopted to help these countries recover their lost assets. In support of these general themes, the report's authors additionally look at 1) the recent increases in illicit financial flows; 2) the impact such flows have on developing countries and their ability to achieve the UN’s Millennium Development Goals; 3) current transnational efforts to identify illicit financial flows and deal with corruption; and 4) what are the best practices to use when trying to recover stolen assets. Note: The publication also includes an interview with Jean Pesme from the Stolen Assets Recovery initiative (StAR) on some of the key issues raised by the authors.
