As in previous editions, the 2019 version of BICC’s Global Militarisation Index weighs the relative importance of a country’s ‘military apparatus’ in relation to the rest of society as a whole. The ten countries identified as having the highest levels of militarisation in this year’s report are Israel, Singapore, Armenia, Cyprus, South Korea, Russia, Greece, Jordan, Belarus and Azerbaijan. The report also 1) provides an overview of regional militarization in Eastern Europe, NATO and the EU, the Middle East, and Asia; and 2) looks at the link between militarisation and fragility.
