This backgrounder provides an overview of some of the characteristics of the militant Islamic terrorist group al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP). In particular, the authors examine 1) the AQAP's origins; 2) its use of propaganda to drive recruitment; and 3) its leadership and funding. They also discuss 1) the fractured political landscape in Yemen; and 2) US policy in Yemen designed to counter AQAP.
