This backgrounder provides an overview of US policy towards free trade agreements. Among other areas, it examines 1) what US trade policy is; 2) the current state of US free trade agreements; 3) the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) and Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP), trade agreements in which the US is heavily involved; 4) the role of the US Congress in the TPP and TTIP negotiations; and 5) the widening gap in the US trade deficit.
