This paper examines some of the theoretical inconsistencies and practical risks of the dominant utilitarian view of legitimacy. The study accesses different approaches with respect to the consequences of utilitarianism in the European Union. In the context of complex conditions characterizing society, the author suggests an alternative model of EU legitimacy that is consistent with the principles of democracy and diversity.
