This year’s version of the Global Peace Index ranks the peacefulness of 162 nations according to 23 qualitative and quantitative indicators. In addition, it gauges global peace via three broad themes – 1) The level of safety and security in a society; 2) the extent of domestic and international conflict that exists; and 3) the degree of militarization that characterize individual nations. Based on all these metrics, the Index’s authors conclude that Iceland and the other Nordic states are this year's most peaceful countries, while the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) unsurprisingly ranks as the most violent region in the world.
