This paper focuses on Mongolia-NATO relations, which grew out of Mongolia's post-Cold War attempts to reach out to "third neighbor" countries and international organizations, and thereby avoid being caught up in a geopolitical competition between Russia and China. In particular, the paper's author considers 1) how Mongolia perceives a rising China; 2) how Russia has attempted to reestablish influence over Mongolia in recent years; 3) the current level of cooperation between Mongolia and NATO; and 4) the factors that hinder greater levels of collaboration between them.
