This commentary looks at the gaps between Chinese perception and the reality of President Xi Jinping’s foreign policy, arguing that Xi’s policies have led to increased US suspicion, which in turn has provoked enhanced US ties to Southeast Asian countries, and China’s decline in the region. The author examines China’s bold extension of control over disputed territories and how this has caused a serious decline in China's relations with key neighbors and destabilized the region. While Chinese media positively portrays the President as a decisive and forceful leader, in reality, the author contends Xi’s assertiveness has simply reinforced US concerns and strengthened resolves to counter Chinese advances.
