This bulletin discusses Algerian gas exports to the EU, the dependence of the country on the revenues from these exports and the implications of the decline in these exports. The author contends that although Algeria has exported gas to Europe for half a century, internal conditions may lead the country to become an importer in the future. While both the EU and Algeria want to ensure the latter remains an exporter rather than an importer - in part because Algeria wants the income from these exports and also because the EU wants a diverse number of suppliers - the chance for this depends on internal reforms and improved investment conditions in Algeria. He also contends that the EU could further this goal by helping to reduce domestic gas consumption in Algeria and to increase access to Algerian gas throughout Europe.
