This bulletin examines the reasons for the thaw in US-Cuba relations and what this development could mean for the EU. More specifically, the authors discuss 1) the events that led to the re-establishment of full diplomatic ties between the two countries; 2) how the US and Cuba may benefit from the improvement in their relations; 3) how US Congress could block the removal of Washington's trade embargo on Cuba and the issue of the US Republication Party's opposition of rapprochement with Cuba; 4) the Cuban government's attempts to ensure that improved relations with the US will not fuel protests for reforms in the country; and 5) the importance of the improvement in US-Cuba ties for the EU and what it might mean for increasing political and economic relations with Latin America.
