This paper focuses on the implications of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) reached between the P5+1 group and Iran in July 2015. More specifically, the author 1) looks at the contents of the JCPOA; 2) contends that although the agreement contains some important concessions to the Iranians, these concessions also benefit the P5+1 group in the long run; 3) predicts structural changes in the Iranian and regional economy due to the expected lifting of sanctions; and 4) discusses the internal and regional context of the agreement, arguing that it might cause a deficit of trust in traditional regional alliances with the US. Finally, the author concludes by pointing out that due to its missile program, which is not covered by JCPOA, Iran is still treated as a potential threat by the US and the NATO.
