This issue of the Sentinel features articles that cover some of the key themes dealt with at the 2015 West Point Senior “Counterterrorism: Unconventional Approaches to an Unconventional Threat” conference. More specifically, the articles examine 1) the common characteristics shared by terrorists, what makes terrorism effective and how to combat against terrorism; 2) new approaches to tackling radicalization and terrorist recruitment; 3) what counterterrorism approaches can learn from the 1999 US "Truth" anti-smoking campaign; and 4) the science of complexity and its implications for counterterrorism efforts. The issue also includes interviews with founder of the Unity Initiative Usman Raja, and former Director of Strategy in the CIA's Directorate of Analysis Dennis Gleeson.
