This brief studies the different types of partnerships that exist in UN peace missions, particularly the operational partnerships found in the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) and the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP). More specifically, the brief 1) explores why some UN member states opt to engage in operational partnerships or might do so in the future; 2) clarifies what makes these types of operations successful; and 3) analyzes the principal benefits and difficulties posed by the partnership option, both at the political and operational levels. Finally, the brief provides six major lessons learned from operational partnerships and recommends additional ways to enhance their effectiveness.
