This expert brief examines the economic competition between India and China in South Asia and their attempts to expand their regional influence through trade, diplomacy, aid, and investment. More specifically, the authors look at 1) India’s and China’s trade involvement in the region; 2) the role migration and remittances play in their economic involvement; 3) Chinese and Indian aid and investment programs; and 4) opportunities for Chinese-Indian economic cooperation in the future. They conclude by stressing that there are new security challenges across South Asia which require cooperation rather than competition between the two great powers.
