This brief discusses China's assertions of territorial sovereignty in the South China Sea, such as the building of military bases on artificial islands, as well as how the US and ASEAN countries have responded to these assertions. The author also briefly discusses how maritime disputes could overshadow Chinese President Xi Jinping's upcoming visit to the US in September 2015 as well what the US can do to continue its role as a guarantor of stability in the Asia Pacific.
