This paper discuses UN-led strategies for the role of the media in conflict prevention and peacebuilding. The author explains that the media has often contributed to the escalation of violent conflicts, but at the same time also features a strong potential for contributing to peacebuilding and conflict transformation. The paper argues that the sooner changes in the role of the media can be implemented, the cheaper and more efficient such a process would become. The author recommends the establishment of a rapid deployment facility to coordinate crisis-, mid- and long-term media and communication strategies.
