This paper examines what options Botswana has to diversify its economy in light of the likely decline in diamonds revenues that the country depends on in the near future. More specifically, the author discusses 1) the ecological and economic issues that have a bearing on Botswana's situation; 2) the potential impact that coal extraction can have on human and environmental well-being; 3) how economic decisions can be hindered by political calculations in the country; 4) the history of Botswana's political economy; 5) why political stability should no longer be taken for granted in the country; 6) the viability of Botswana’s coal and iron ore industries; 7) how iron ore and other base metal production could benefit the country; and 8) the place of tourism in the country's economy. The author also provides recommendations on how to proceed with diversifying Botswana's economy in light of the issues addressed in the paper.
