This paper examines the likelihood that the US will lift its export ban on oil and EU interest in this issue in light of its energy needs. More specifically, the authors examine 1) debate in the US over whether to continue the crude oil export ban; 2) the reasons for the adoption of the ban in 1975; 3) the main arguments for and against the continuation of the ban; 4) the potential impact of the 2016 US presidential election on the future of the ban; 5) how the TTIP treaty between the EU and the US could affect energy relations between the two actors, including how its implications for liquid natural gas exports; and 6) what the lifting of the oil ban would mean for the EU.
