In light of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 2 which aims to end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition, this brief looks at what governments in the Global South can do to improve food access in urban areas. The authors recommend that these governments should 1) support the informal food economy, which includes open-air markets, traveling markets and other small vendors, in helping to improve food security; 2) integrate non-food issues related to food security (such as how to improve infrastructure); 3) collaborate with supermarkets to create policies catering to the poor; and 4) track food consumption patterns to develop strategies to improve food access.
