This brief examines how attempts to privatize public goods and services led to populist uprisings that demanded the renationalization of what was 'lost'. To examine this issue more closely, the brief's authors first explore the history of this phenomenon in Latin America, Central Asia and Europe. They then recommend ways that states and service sectors can minimize the social and political unrest that might result from privatization efforts.
