This paper reviews the work of the Nobel Prize winning economist Amartya Sen, who introduced the significance of fundamental human freedoms and human rights for development theory and practice. The author analyses human rights issues not only from the perspectives of separate academic disciplines but also from the aspect of the institutional, economic and structural processes that impact on individual freedoms and human rights. The study states that Sen's research agenda challenges common thinking and provides a basis for moving forward.
