This commentary looks at the emission reduction target pledges submitted by the countries who will take part in the 2015 Paris Climate Summit and contends they will not be enough to achieve the target of limiting global warming to 2°C by the end of the 21st century. Though the author suggests that this means the pledges lack ambition, he also suggests that they could nevertheless serve a foundation for future climate actions to address climate change. Finally, he 1) discusses how the EU can help developing countries play a greater role in dealing with climate change; and 2) suggests that the EU needs to become aware that it may not have the ability to act as a leader in setting ambitious global targets for emissions reductions.
