This backgrounder provides an overview of the UN's seventeen Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which are due to succeed the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) at the end of 2015. In particular, the author examines 1) what the overall objectives of the SDGs are; 2) how the goals of the SDGs differ from the outgoing MDGs; 3) the extent to which the MDGs have been successful; 4) how the SDGs will be financed, measured and monitored; and 5) some of the criticisms which have been aimed at the SDGs.
