This paper examines 1) how Central Asian nations have reacted to Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, and 2) whether Kazakhstan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity might be under threat. In the first case, the paper’s authors contend that the Central Asian states are more concerned about Western sanctions against Russia and their downstream economic impact. In the case of Kazakhstan, there are a number of factors that militate against a Russian threat to the country, including its important role in Moscow’s regional agenda.
