This paper examines the economic, political, and security crises facing Algeria and how they might impact the country in the short- to medium-term. More specifically, the paper's author 1) examines how the recent collapse in global oil prices has led the country to deplete its foreign exchange reserves and collect less taxes; 2) explores the political problems that have beset the country since the end of its civil war in 1999; 3) considers how the chaos in Libya, the emerging extremism in Tunisia, and the ongoing violence in northern Mali all pose a danger to the country's security, as does the ‘residual terrorism’ inside Algeria itself; and 4) contemplates the ongoing troubles with Morocco over the latter’s annexation of the Western Sahara in 1975.
