This brief assesses the five principles guiding the US' post-2016 strategy in Afghanistan. The principles include 1) continuing the development of key capabilities in the Afghan National Security Forces and maintaining a US counterterrorism mission in the country; 2) providing clarity and confidence for Afghans, primarily through the US’ commitment to extend its presence in the country beyond 2016; 3) promoting regional cooperation, particularly with Pakistan; 4) generating much-needed economic activity; and 5) strengthening the Afghan National Unity Government in order to ensure better governance, electoral reform, women's rights and less corruption.
