This backgrounder focuses on various aspects of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). In particular, it 1) explains what the SCO is; 2) contemplates how Sino-Russian relations have shaped the organization; 3) focuses on the role it's presently playing in Afghanistan; 4) wonders whether or not the SCO fosters economic growth among its members; and 5) ponders what effects expanding the organization’s membership roll might have.
