This analysis uses the Elcano 1990-2014 Global Index to compare the evolving worldwide “economic presence” of the Big Five European (EB5) economies with the emerging economies of the BRICS and the Next 11 (N11). The text’s author concludes that 1) the EB5 economies’ presence has indeed waned, especially vis-à-vis the BRICS, although not so much against the N11; 2) China and Germany are the two big winners in terms of global economic presence; 3) the UK has shown considerable dynamism over recent years; and 4) France, despite being generally described as economically stagnant, has not done too badly – i.e., it has certainly done better than Italy and Spain, which have recently been overtaken by India.
