This analysis 1) examines China’s growing assertiveness, 2) clarifies its strategic interests in the South China Sea, and 3) sheds light on the changing strategic realities in East Asia, which are being shaped by Beijing’s rising military might, its desire to upend the established regional order, and the area’s maritime disputes.
