This paper recounts the efforts of the United Nations Operation in Mozambique (ONUMOZ) to disarm the Mozambican National Resistance (RENAMO) and Mozambique Liberation Front (FRELIMO) from 1992-1994. The text’s author additionally examines 1) three complicated arms recovery programs that were conducted after ONUMOZ's mandate had expired, and 2) the wider implications of Mozambique's experiences with disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration (DDR) for future UN and African Union peacekeeping missions on the continent.
