This brief examines the threats that emerged in the Maghreb and Sahel regions after the collapse of Libya in 2011 and the conflict in Mali in 2012-2013. As far as the text's authors are concerned, the security of both areas became intertwined when the Tuaregs who had been employed in the Libyan security system returned home to Mali and subsequently contributed to the state’s partial collapse. To ensure the security situation doesn't get worse in these interconnected regions, the authors ultimately argue that Europe should work to contain the regional great power competition in Libya and Mali and actively push for the two countries' socio-economic and political development.
