This brief explains how Salafi ideology and activism are once again emerging as a source of socio-political controversy in Algeria. The ideology is experiencing a revival because of economic stagnation, political paralysis and demographic changes in Algerian society. Interestingly, the text's author points out that the most prominent among the country's Salfists are the so-called ‘quietists’ who abstain from formal politics and reject violence. It’s a stance the Algerian government may indeed appreciate as it continues to struggle against Islamists in the country.
