This backgrounder looks at the widespread violence afflicting El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras and how it has led to large numbers of asylum seekers making their way to the United States. The text’s author specifically looks at 1) the people who have fled this part of the world in recent years and why they’re leaving; 2) what is causing the generalized violence and why it has lasted so long; 3) what the three governments have done to stop the carnage and ameliorate the regional impact it’s having; and 4) how the US has tried to address the ills of this northern triangle of Central America.
