This commentary examines the origins of the so-called Islamic State (IS) and why the group and (its ideology) have proven to be so popular over the last couple of years. Like so many others, the text’s author also contends that countering IS isn’t just about neutralizing violent jihadism; it’s also about addressing its root causes.
